In our recent introduction to eFront’s architecture, we emphasized it’s open source nature and extensibility. In this post we’ll take a look at eFront’s module system, and how it enables eFront users to extend and mold the software to their e-learning needs.
In the software world we call extensible programs “modular”, and their distinct units of functionality “modules”. When those modules are installed separately and after the installation of the basic software, they are also called “plug-ins” and “add-ons” (think of browser add-ons/plug-ins, from the Flash Player and IE toolbars to the rich Firefox add-on ecosystem).
If you’re reading this you’re either evaluating eFront (or eFrontPro, our revamped, flagship product) or you have already joined the ranks of those who use it and love it. In either case, it might be interesting to take a look under the hood, and see what makes its engine tick: the technologies, APIs, programming libraries and tools we used in creating it.
Don’t worry, you won’t need a degree in programming to understand this post. We’ll just give you a high level description of what powers eFront, the software analogous of opening the hood of a Ferrari to take a peak at its engine; you don’t need to be mechanic to appreciate that. And in case you do have a degree in programming (or can hire someone who does) our software let’s you modify, enhance and alter whatever part of it you want to build the hot-rod of your dreams.
Do you want to make your content more appealing and interactive? You can enrich it by adding videos to your units! There are two ways you can do this:
Upload your videos to the lesson’s file manager. While editing the unit place the mouse where you want to insert the video. Open the file manager, search for the video you want to add and simply click on the blue arrow: The video is now inserted and you can change its dimensions by dragging its edges. Continue reading →

As many of our users already know, we’ve been working on eFront-4 for some time now. During this lengthy process we have come across two major discoveries:
Firstly, we witnessed a strong movement towards cloud, lean and mobile solutions for eLearning. Cloud comes with several benefits for the client and allows one to offer a more integrated and smoother experience. The lean movement offers simpler, focused solutions that emphasize practicality over completeness.
Secondly, as we were making progress on eFront-4 it became obvious that the core changes were of such a magnitude that it would be impossible to offer compatibility with the current eFront offering. A transition would have offered little benefit for current customers since they would have to start their implementation from scratch.
After several years in social media / communications for new technologies, with a focus on the elearning industry (and of course, after having been an avid reader of the eFront blog myself!), I have now joined the eFront team. And I’m excited to be part of the eFront community!
I like blogging about social media, social learning, the future workplace, how culture affects learning, workplace collaboration, learning and talent management, innovation and disruptive technologies. I began my career in tertiary education, and then gravitated towards social media communications, blogging and community building. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to work with many innovative products in the eLearning industry, but eFront always stood out with its flourishing online community (and reasons listed below!).
In the context of Learntec trade fair our Austrian VAR (Click-and-learn) has been awarded with two “gold medals” (in the category “LMS” – with eFront ; and in the category “development of individual learning content”). Customers voted our Austrian VAR into first place within the “eLearning CHECK” which is the greatest customer-award for eLearning in the German speaking market. eLearning CHECK is an independent customer satisfaction survey for the German speaking eLearning market. It is organized by Checkpoint eLearning (www.checkpoint-eLearning.com), Sales Potential (www.salespotential.de) and Goethe-University Frankfurt. Our own G.Kalfas, took part on this event on behalf of eFront and provide us with several pictures from the event. It is good to love. But even better when people love you back!
